Until recently, most CAs were for-profit businesses that charged for authentication and signing services. In order to make this process free for users, Let’s Encrypt uses sponsorships and contributions to fund the required infrastructure.
Is Let’s Encrypt Certificate Free?
Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit. It is a service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).
What is an SSL and SSL certificate and how does it all work?

A public-key certificate, or SSL certificate, is a cryptographic file stored on your web server that facilitates safe, encrypted internet communication. There are two main functions of SSL certificates:
Provide encryption: SSL encrypts the exchange of information between your website and the user’s browser, making it unreadable to thieves.
Authentication and trust: SSL certificates issued by reputable certificate authorities provide authentication and trust. In this way, your visitors will know they’re on the right website and that their information is secure.
During a visitor’s attempt to connect to your website via the internet, both communication parties-client and server-verify each other’s identities before establishing a relationship. SSL handshakes are also known as SSL handshakes. As soon as both participants have authenticated each other, a session key is generated, which allows
symmetric encryption of the particular session.
How do you install a free SSL certificate using the Let’s Encrypt download?
Now that you have the free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, it’s time to install it on your website.
To get started, download and install the Let’s Encrypt client from here: https://letsencrypt.org/ After installation is complete, open the program from your start menu or by clicking Start > Run > type “Let’s Encrypt Certificate Manager” without quotes and press enter. In this window select New Client (1), then follow these steps:
Enter a name for your new certificate in the Name field (2) – this will be used later when entering details into
browsers so make sure it’s descriptive enough!
Choose which type of CA certificate authority(s) you want to use – there are two options here: Standard or Intermediate; if unsure choose standard because it offers more flexibility than intermediate but may take longer to issue certificates depending on how many domains are being issued at once or how complex their configurations are (e.g., multiple subdomains).

How to get a Let’s Encrypt SSL Certificate?
In order to obtain a certificate for a domain, the requester must demonstrate ownership. An application called certbot is installed on the server of the domain’s website in order to confirm the ownership of a domain. A certain file (the check file) is downloaded from the Let’s Encrypt server by this program. The check file is placed in the a.well-known directory created by the bot application within the web server’s directory.
On the web server, ports 80 and 443 should be open.
In the second stage of the confirmation procedure, Let’s Encrypt downloads the check file from the server’s domain. When available, Let’s Encrypt compares the file’s name and contents with its own check file. Let’s Encrypt distributes three SSL certificates and a private key file if everything is in order.
You can complete the certificate configuration by entering the command line of your site’s server and installing the certbot program.
Your website’s operating system and web server should be chosen. You can install Apache and Nginx in interactive mode using plugins. The plugins were not able to obtain certificates, so we recommend using the webroot method.
Apache includes a virtual host for certbot to place the check file. Then, we executed the following command:

To request and receive SSL certificates for the domain ineedcertfromletsencrypt.tk. It is a free domain that has been registered for this tutorial. /etc/httpd/www is the path to the virtual host directory in the command line.
There are some key prerequisites for receiving the certificates, regardless of which web server you’re using for your domain.
Ports 80 and 443 should be open on the web server.
The contents of the host should be accessible. It must be accessed via the URL http://domainname.com/.wellknown/checkfile, where the domain name is the name of the domain for which you need a certificate, and the check file is the name of the testing file.
Certbot should be allowed to write to and read from the /.well-known folder and create subdirectories within it (.well-known to be exact).
If all of the prerequisites were met and the certification procedure was completed successfully, your certificates will be located in the /etc/letsencrypt/archive/ folder (where your domain’s name is).
How long does it take to get a Let’s Encrypt Certificate?
It depends on the type of certificate you want. For example, it will take longer to get an Age-Based Certificate than a Wildcard Matching Certificate because the former requires more steps and has more variables that need to be taken into account. You can also see this by looking at the time it took for me to get my certificate:
I chose a . COM domain name from Namecheap that was in good standing with Google (validation status Gold).
My hosting provider (StableHost) had no issues with my domain name being hosted on their platform for a year before purchasing my SSL cert from Let’s Encrypt (the same one used by StableHost themselves).
The only thing I did differently is that instead of using SSL through HAProxy as they recommended, I used NGINX Plus instead because they had free alternatives available at the time – this might have been an issue if there were any issues later on down the line when we started working together again after we’d already moved all our sites over onto different servers anyway so there wasn’t much risk involved here either way!
How do I create an SSL certificate for my website?
To get a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, you will need to create an account with Let’s Encrypt. Once you have an account, follow the steps below:
Click on “Get Started” in the top right corner of their website and then choose “Install Server” from the dropdown menu that appears on your screen.
Click through this page until it asks for your domain name (the one which identifies your website). If this is not listed as part of that domain name, then simply add it by clicking on “Add Domain”. You’ll be asked if you want to use a wildcard character (for example *.example.*) or just leave it blank so that everything under example would be included in order for usernames/passwords etc., but nothing else under any other subdomains/subdirectories
